Rough Notes

Jocko: The best way to content with problems/issues/adversity is by taking action. The more you sit/wait with that adversity the worse its gonna get. The action doesn't have to be huge, e.g. just say to yourself "This is what happened, it didn't go the way we wanted to, and we need get out there". Action is a cure for many things in life.

With regards to energy, Andrew believes that e.g. energy is some Eastern traditions like chi is catecholamines. Jocko believes there is a correspondence between energy and confidence.

To encourage others not to engage in behaviour such as over drinking, tell them that it only helps the adversity (e.g. the enemy during combat).

Motivation comes and goes so its not a good idea to rely on it, rather taking action as per discipline is a better option.

Andrew: On meditation, there are roughly 2 types:

  • Focused attention meditation: Closing your eyes, focus on something like your breath, body, or a visual target - great for improving focus.
  • Open observer meditation: Purposefully don't include any target in your mind, and just observe whatever comes up without hovering on one thing for too long - helps focus and also creativity.

In general, not getting caught up with what is happening infront of them, taking a step back and detach from emotions and whats going on (the whole ecosystem you are in) is a good thing to do everyday - Jocko calls this the true superpower of life. You may see everything as stuck, hopeless etc. like you are inside storm cloud but a person from the outside can see the situation more clearly outside the storm cloud.

Team building is about using peoples strengths (e.g. creativity, ability to execute) together instead of e.g. trying to make an introvert a salesperson.

Understanding whats important and what's not, ask yourself:

  • Is this important or not?
  • Is this solvable or not?
  • What's the return on solving this?
  • What's the effort to solve this?
  • How will it impact my life if I focus on it?

This is very much related to detachment mentioned above, the solution to the problem is not going to be found in the problem, you need to step back to assess everything mentioned above.

Some people just before sleep, sitting down and forcing yourself to think in complete sentences with punctuation about some problem.
