Rough Notes
- Thyroid and growth hormone are the two hormones are the most significant for setting overall level of metabolism. Metabolism is the consumption of energy in the cells of the body for growth, repair of tissues and maintenance of function like for the brain. For e.g. sitting on the bed thinking all day consumes around 75% of your metabolic needs. Tissues in muscle burn more energy than those in body fat, so metabolism can be increased by improving muscle-fat composition.
- Main role of thyroid hormone (T3?) is to promote metabolism, in the consumption of energy including build-up of tissues and acts on muscle, the liver, cartilage, bones etc.
- Iodine, L-tyrosine, selenium is important for your thyroid. You probably are getting enough of the first 2.
- Growth hormone also relates to metabolism and very similar to thyroid hormone.
- Meditation:
- Certain types of meditiation can get brains into states that mimic slow wave sleep, which is beneficial to increase growth hormone. Read the book "Altered States", where the author mentions 20 minutes of sitting meditation can mimic this.
- Exercise also increases growth hormone, but this depends on the type/intensity and duration of the exercise - specifically weight training or 60 minutes of endurance training (since above this increases cortisol).
- Note that growth hormone release changes substantially over lifespan.
