Rough Notes

  • Lower motor neurons connect with muscles i.e. store muscle memory.
  • Upper motor neurons send signals for engaging in behaviour.
  • Errors are key for learning.
  • After frustrations, if you leverage it, you are setting yourself up for plasticity mechanism to engage, otherwise you are maintaining the feeling of frustration and rewiring yourself to miserable.
  • For adults, smaller errors i.e. incremental errors are essential, and it is bad to learn a lot of information at once.
  • Making errors leads to plasticity, 7-30 minutes per learning period for adults.
  • One can bypass the need for incremental learning if the goal is important enough, e.g. to satisfy hunger.
  • Incentive plays an influential role, how important something is for us has effects on plasticity.
  • Dopamine gives motivation, we need to learn to attach dopamine in a subjective way to the process of making errors.
  • We can make dopamine work for us, as dopamine can be released according to what we subjectively believe is good for us.
  • Plasticity is a state, not a goal.
  • To increase likelihood of being in a state of plasticity, make errors, for e.g. disrupt the vestibular system by doing activities which do not conform to regular feeling of gravity such as being close to falling, yoga, handstands etc.
  • For mornings, look at light and delay caffeine for 2 hours after waking up.
  • When alert, it is a great time to do tasks where you know what you have to do.
  • When calm/drowsy, it is a great time to do tasks related to creativity.
