Research

What is the difference between doing research and working in industry?

Some personal thoughts on this:

  • In research, you search for the problem and try to ask the right question, then answer it. In industry, you are often given the problem to solve.
  • Failure modes are probably more informative and have a larger impact in research than in industry, where success is valued more. Since the main job of the researcher is to propose good hypotheses, its better when they are falsified faster. This being said, failure modes are often not reported in science, which is a shame.
